The Power of Sour

The Power of Sour

on Aug 07 2026

For neurodivergent individuals, including those with ASD or ADHD, sour food can be an effective strategy for sensory regulation.

How can sour food help? It’s easy to imagine the face you make when someone bites into something sour. It’s completely involuntary. And that response helps invoke pattern interruption or sensory grounding mechanics.

In and of itself, sour isn’t the solution; however, the sensation rapidly shifts our attention to the gustatory cortex, which processes intense taste information. Not only does our face pucker and our muscles contract, but we also produce more saliva and experience a temporary spike in heart rate.

And in that moment…

Sensory Grounding

When a person experiences sensory overload, intense anxiety, or an impending meltdown, their nervous system is often locked into a "fight-or-flight" state. The amygdala—the brain's threat-processing center—is highly active, making it nearly impossible to process logic or calm down through reasoning.

In that moment…

This effect can effectively short-circuit escalating overwhelm, helping the brain shift into the present moment. It provides a brief window of calm to step away from triggers and apply other helpful coping strategies.

Dopamine & Focus Support

What about those who are on the other side of sensory input, under-responsive, or sensory seeking?

That moment…

It can help boost alertness and focus. The same gustatory shock can be a quick hit of surprise to release dopamine and give an opportunity to support natural changes in focus.

Oral Sensory Stimming

Sensory strategies can be effective because they bypass the need for complex communication. We don’t need to use our words, it’s visceral.

There in that brief moment…

We focus on tactile & gustatory. It’s akin to other intense physical sensations like holding a piece of ice or splashing cold water on your face. This, in turn, allows for redirecting & resetting. Creating windows to step into the present moment and step away from triggers and apply alternative coping strategies.

Other Considerations

Again, we are not professional medical, mental health, or healthcare providers. These are two of many other considerations.

Dental health

Teeth are one of the elephants in the candy store. We know it. Relying solely on sour candies and extensive use isn’t healthy for you, or your teeth. The higher concentrations of citric and malic acid can erode tooth enamel. If you’re concerned, you can also use a gentler alternative of cold water with strong, unsweetened lemon juice.

Not the solution

Again, this “reset” provided isn’t the actual solution. It only lasts a few moments and is intended to be a quick pause to allow the use of other coping strategies. Use the moment to quickly grab noise cancelling headphones, or find an escape route from your environment. Use the moment to help someone change focus to another longer term regulation tool.
